The Institute of International Law (IIL) was founded on 8 September 1873 at the Ghent Town Hall in Belgium by eleven international lawyers of renown.  The Institute is a learned society and its purpose is to promote the progress of international law. In recognition of its action in favour of arbitration among States, a peaceful means of settling disputes, the Institute has received the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 2023 the Institute of International Law celebrated its 150th anniversary during its 81st session of Angers from 27 August until 2 September 2023. In commemoration of its anniversary, the Institute launched:

  • a book on the Institute’s history and work:

150 Years of Contributing to the Development of International Law – Justitia et Pace (1873-2023) 

 

  • a documentary: Justitia et Pace. Le 150e anniversaire de l’Institut de Droit international
