Biography

Campbell McLachlan is Professor of Law at Victoria University of Wellington, teaching public and private international law and international arbitration and dispute settlement. He is author of Foreign Relations Law (Cambridge UP 2014) – the first modern study of this field in relation to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. He is also author (with Weiniger & Shore) of International Investment Arbitration: Substantive Principles (Oxford UP 2nd edn 2017). He is a Specialist Editor of Dicey, Morris & Collins on the Conflict of Laws (15th edn 2012) and Joint Editor-in-Chief of ICSID Review–Foreign Investment Law Journal. He gave a Special Course at The Hague Academy of International Law in 2008 on Lis Pendens in International Litigation (2008) 336 Recueil des Cours 199 (and in paperback). Campbell served as President of the Australian & New Zealand Society of International Law from 2006-9. He was awarded the New Zealand Law Foundation International Research Fellowship in 2011 and has been a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College Oxford, the Lauterpacht Research Centre in Cambridge and at NYU. In 2015, he was elected to the Institut de Droit International and is Rapporteur of its 18th Commission on Equality of Parties before International Investment Tribunals. In 2016, he was elected Arthur Goodhart Visiting Professor in Legal Science in the University of Cambridge for the year 2020. He is an international advisor to the American Law Institute’s Restatement 4th Foreign Relations Law project. Campbell is also a practising lawyer, previously as a partner in Herbert Smith London and currently as a barrister (NZ, call 1984, QC 2007) and associate member of Bankside Chambers (Auckland & Singapore) and Essex Court Chambers (London). He is a member of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators, serving as President or member of a number of international arbitral tribunals under the auspices of ICSID and the PCA. He holds an LL B (Hons) degree from Victoria University of Wellington, a Ph D from the University of London and the Diploma cum laude of The Hague Academy of International Law.
